It was a kind thing to do, inviting her to go with him to Marie’s party.

Friendly. Gentlemanly.

His sister even said so.

“How sweet of you to think of her,” Gina enthused on Wednesday evening when she rang him up to see how things were going on.

“They’re going fine,” he told her, and then he told her what he’d done.

“Wonderful,” she said. “How thoughtful of you, Gib.”

“That’s me,” he muttered. “Thoughtful to the end.”

“You are, Gib. Truly. You’re the dearest man.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, feeling uncomfortable, telling himself he had no reason to be. It was a straightforward invitation. No more, no less.

So he wasn’t going to feel guilty about it. He wasn’t going to feel as if he was throwing her to the wolves. It was what she wanted—an “experience.” It would be that, all right. And it would be good for her!

And him.

He reckoned she’d be on the plane to Iowa within days after it.

“Marie is your agent? The one who knows everyone? Well, Chloe will certainly have something to talk about when she gets home, won’t she?”

Gib concurred. “Oh, yes.”

Not that he figured she would talk about it. She probably wouldn’t even want to remember it. Not too closely, anyway. Going to one of Marie Kemmerer’s parties was a little bit like flying too close to the sun. A rarified atmosphere if there ever was one.

You had to be damned wary, lest you get burned.

Gib wouldn’t let Chloe get badly burned. He just wanted her scorched a bit.

And he was going to enjoy doing a little of the scorching.
